Everybody needs at least one! We have ready-to-ship “EXPERIMENTAL” placards in white and black, cut out of durable vinyl. The letters are 2-inches tall, to comply with 14 CFR 45.23(b), which says:
When marks include only the Roman capital letter “N” and the registration number is displayed on limited, restricted or light-sport category aircraft or experimental or provisionally certificated aircraft, the operator must also display on that aircraft near each entrance to the cabin, cockpit, or pilot station, in letters not less than 2 inches nor more than 6 inches high, the words “limited,” “restricted,” “light-sport,” “experimental,” or “provisional,” as applicable.
Note: if you are building a Bearhawk LSA, you need the “Experimental” placard, not the “Light-Sport”.
The width of these can be highly variable. The regulations specify a height, but we have made them anywhere from 6 to 24 inches wide. If you have a constraint, please let us know and we’ll make it to fit.
We can make this in any font that you’d like, but we can’t be sure your DAR will approve if the font is too fancy. We have several colors of vinyl on hand to cut to order, such as red, silver, pink, yellow, and blue, and we can always custom order whatever you might like to have. We can also make these in a paint mask for the same price.
If you have any doubts, coordinate with your DAR, and the tell us what we can do to get you what you need!
To apply, simply peel the clear carrier sheet away from the blue backing paper. Ensure that the white or black letters peel off with the carrier sheet. Apply the sticky bits to your interior, rub the letters. Remove the clear piece, leaving behind the letters. No need to align each letter, just align the whole word.
Outdoor vinyl is extra durable/permanent. The other colors are a high quality indoor/outdoor variety that will last many years, and be easier to remove if you should ever need to. If you’d like a color other than black or white, send us a message to email@example.com.
